Legal Question in Elder Law in Connecticut

Medicaid Eligibility and Quit Claiming a Home

Hello, so this is the situation - we are in connecticut, my mother-in-law is 62, and just diagnosed with cancer. We're planning to move in with her to take care of her, and she wants to quit claim the house to us. She has a fair amount of assets in cash and bonds and things like that she's planning on paying for her medical care with. However, if she does run out of money she was wondering if she'll be able to receive medicaid to help pay for treatment. She won't be going into a nursing home, and we would be taking care of her, and it would be both hers and our primary residence. Will quit claiming the house effect Medicaid eligibility?

What I've read online is varied and really just references that it might have issues with the five year look back, but that the look back might only apply to if she goes in a nursing home (which she won't).

So basically, we're just trying to find out if it will effect her Medicaid eligibility, and if they'll try and come after us for the money in the house?

Thanks for the help!

You need to consult with an elder law attorney. These questions are too complicated to give a generic answer on this website.
