Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Connecticut

property line dispute

we have owned our home since june of 98, we bought it from an older couple that built it in 1974. thers was the first home in the area. there is a cetain tract of land on the left side of the home that had a few pine trees that we have taken care of. We maintained the area, grass cutting, raking etc. at christmas we even decorated the trees. the people before us did the same. we removed the trees last year to make better use of the land and the new owners of the home next door said they were there trees and that the parcel of land is there's. they dont mind that the trees are not there but want to erect a fence were they feel the line is , cutting one third of my driveway away. is there a law on the books in ct that states that if a parcel of land is taken care of for a number of years, does it in fact become the caretakers property?

Re: property line dispute

Speak to an attorney in person. I'm sure a title search and survey will have to be done. I would go to the attorney who did your closing as he may have the information in his files. Land disputes are not easy to handle by yourself. There is a statute concerning adverse possession but you have to explain all the facts you know to the attorney before taking that action.
