Unfortunately, having a diagnosed mental illness or history of such does not place a person in one of the federally protected categories of antidiscrimination law and, therefore, in an employment-at-will jurisdiction such as the Commonwealth of Virginia which, also, provides no such protection as far as I am aware for an an employee in this type of situation, the employer is free to terminate such a person with impunity(usually, of course, under the pretext
of something else.
