Legal Question in Employment Law in District of Columbia

cobra benefits

I was terminated from employment at an agency in Wshington, DC 2 months ago alleging that I abandoned my positiion when in fact I have been ill and now receiving social security disability and presently residing in New York. I have not received any info re cobra benefits. I have contacted human resources about this matter and was told that no information about my termination had been forwarded to human resources, therefore they had no info about my cobra benefits. Is there a time schedule re my electing cobra benefits and if so how can I get them to comply. It is hard for me to believe that they have no info re the termination. I received the termination letter by certified mail.

Re: cobra benefits

You should contact not just HR but the designated heath plans administrator for this organization and explain what's happened. Follow up with written notice, if necessary with a copy to:

U.S. Department of Labor,

Employee Benefits Security Administration,

Division of Technical Assistance & Inquiries,

200 Constitution Avenue N.W Suite N5619

Washington, D.C. 20210

If necessary, you can also contact the Dept. of Labor at their toll free ph.# which I am not permitted to provide here for further assistance with your problem.
