Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

I vacated a house that I own last year on 8/24/2009. I transferred my electric service a different house using the same company and still use the same comapny up to this date. I am finally about to finalize selling that house and my real estate agent called me to notify me that I owe money to the electric company and that the buyer can't put the electric under his name until this bill is paid. I called the electric company and they told me that aparently right after I left last year, there was some illegal tampering and that because I am the owner, I am responsible for a total of $530 and that there is nothing that I can do about it. I asked them how come this was the first time that I hear about it even though I pay them every month and they have all of my contact information and they had no answer but I still have to pay. I don't have that money and I feel that I could have dealt with this issue last year right after it supposedly happend. Now I am in danger of not being able to sell the house. Is there anything that I can do? We they supposed to notify me right away? I don't know what to do, I stressed writting this message at 1:20am because I can't sleep over it. The close was supposed to finalize this week. Please advise. Thank you very much!
