The state may only hold a juvenile for 21 days from the date of arrest with a possible 9 day extention if good cause is shown. Your greater concern should be the possiblity of the state direct filing your child into the adult system. As this appears to be a violent crime the adult system could be a possibility.

If your child is able to remain in the juvenile system he would be facing a juvenile program which could last anywhere from 6 months to a maximum of 3 years.

If your child is transferrd to adult court he could be facing the possiblility of life in prison as this appears to be a first degree felony punishable by life in prison.

Please feel free to call if you have any questions or would like advice on what to do from here.
