Legal Question in Criminal Law in Florida

I just recently was written a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia and its my first offence. Im still a college student with a limited amount of money and I really wanted this off my record for future schools and jobs. But the attorney I had just contacted told me his price was estimated 3,500. So I'm here wondering if there's a more affordable method to getting this all taken care of..

You can apply for a Public Defender. If approved, the Public Defender becomes your attorney and can present your defense. It is best that you try to get into a diversion program because if you successfully complete the diversion program you are able to expunge your records (assuming you have no other conviction and have never before secured a sealing or expunction among other conditions).

Call around and speak with other lawyers. Possession of Drug Paraphernalia is a misdemeanor and should not be so complicated as to require such a high fee to have it addressed. Furthermore, as a 1st time offender, you may be eligible to have the case referred to a diversion program, which would allow you to earn a dismissal of the charge. I can tell you that in Central Florida, the average fee for that offense is around $1,500.00, not $3,500.00.
