Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

my 16 year old, going to be 17 on March 6th, has run away for home. we live in tampa, fl and my son's father lives in chicago, il. our son has been in contact with his father and has asked to go visit him so we got him a ticket for Feb 15th. we have joint custody of the children with myself being primary residential custodian. my question is my ex-husband asked his attorney if our son moves to chicago to live with him would we have to change the primary residential custodian to my ex-husband his lawyer said we did, is this true? since we have joint custody of the kids.
