Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

Haiti Divorce Decrees

My husband and I were married in Okaloosa County, Flordia. After 7 months of marriage he flew to Haiti and got an off-shore divorce. I was served June 23rd (all in French) with a response date of June 19th. Can this be considered a legal divorce?

Re: Haiti Divorce Decrees

Florida will usually honor foreign divorces, so your answer is probably yes. However, if you have real estate in the U.S. or children together in Florida, the Haitian divorce may not pertain to the children or property. Your husband may have to file an action in Florida to "domesticate" the divorce.

You may want to speak to a Haitian lawyer to learn more. Sounds like you are asking us this question a little late, though.
