How does the date of separation effect the divoce?

It may determine the point at which the judge decides the value of the assets to be divided. For instance, let's suppose that, on the date of separation, the husband has a 401k worth $100,000. On the date of filing the divorce, the 401k is worth $75,000. On the date of trial, the 401k is worth $50,000. Depending on the circumstances, the judge is allowed to use one of these dates--or even other dates--in deciding how much of the 401k the wife gets.
