Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

my son is 5 years old , his mom is 25 ,an i am 30. 2 years ago she was hospitolized and diagnosed with paranoid skitzo. since then i have not seen my son or her. she dissapeared for 2 years and now she is back in tampa. i dont think my son is safe with her........ can me or my mother gain custody of my son due to her isolation and mental illness?
