Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Florida

Use of copyright song in presentation

Our non-profit is making a CD to distribute for free to local churches to aid our cause - build support for a homeless shelter. We want to incorporate a song from a noted singer. It's a single track and the entire track would run throughout the presentation. The lyrics would not be on the screen; neither would the image of the artist. It's simply a background vocal. Do we need to get a license to do this? Are we in danger of copyright infringement if we don't receive permission?

You should contact the music publisher and the record company who may, after hearing your intended use, issue you a low-cost license. Or, you can contact the artist's agent to see if you can work that end. Sounds like a terrific cause. Give it a shot.
