Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Florida

lost and found

Hi,

I work at a Zoo and a lot of people leave things here accidentally. My question is what is our legal responsibility for making sure they get their property back. Our current policy is to make copies of the person picking up the lost and found item's ID. Are we allowed to do that? Should we make ourselves that responsible for making sure that the right person picks up the item?

You should probably do the usual of asking them to describe the item first and getting their id is very responsible of you, but you don't want to keep the full ID number so black that out and copy it so you don't accept liability for misuse of that personal information.
