Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida

My former employer has given my name/address/phone/SSN to one of its creditors

My employer terminated me in October 2001. Since then they have given my name, address, phone number, and SSN to at least five of their creditors. I received at least one written letter from one company (other contact was via phone) requesting that I pay for a purchase that I made for the company while employed and at the behest of the company president. Now I am receiving collection notices for a company retained by this creditor. My question is mainly about the legality and ethics involved in supplying people and companies with an employee's personal information, regardless of the employer's reason. Can they legally do such a thing to me?

You will need to check with the credit bureaus and/or the federal trade commission to determine if there has been a violation of the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
