Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida

overpayment of wages

I worked for an environmental company for about 7 months, during that time it seems as I was doubled paid on two pay periods, just recently I was ''let go'' with no notice on a Friday, a few days later I received a phone call from the company stating that they are withholding my last check and that I still owe them money, that I can either pay them or come work one week for free, is this legal or is there anything that I can do to stop this, I have direct deposit and never receive a paper check and had no knowledge of the overpayment until I received the call, all my bills and such are automatically withdrawn from my bank account.

Re: overpayment of wages

Most likely, if they did "overpay" you, they are entitled to get it back. You may wish to inform you bank not to authorize any automatic withdrawals to them and work a deal with them, as it will cost them time and money to bring an action to collect from you.
