Legal Question in Personal Injury in Florida

I was in an accident in Tampa, FL in July of 09. I was cited at fault for the accident. Without knowledge my insurance had lapsed for 1 week. I am now being sued for the damage of the vehicle and medical costs adding up to $15,000.00 but they are willing to settle at $8,000.00. Basically I am asking in the state of FL when my insurance lapsed within a week, am I still covered under that insurance company? Or am I totally on my own?
