after death liability
my mother has accrued a substantial amount of debt in medical bill due to know life insurance. My question is if she was to pass away today, would my brother and I be responsible for her debt?

Only her assets are subject to her debts. Only if your have somehow agreed to pay or guarantee those debts would you be liable.
