Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Florida

power of attorney

My mom is in the hospital refusing amuptation. I know for a fact she does not want my brother or the state to get her house. How do I get power of attorney, my co workers said just have her sign it, get a notary & file with the court, give drs copy. Am I responsible for her bills, mortgage etc... can I do this without an attorney as funds are tight for me right now
