If an old car loan is showing as a charge off on my credit, can I still be sued?

Sure. You still owe the money. The credit bureau is not a party to your contract with the lender, and a charge off just means they consider you as someone who refuses to pay your debts and they get a tax advantage for bad debts (until they sue you and get paid).

Of course. Charge off is simply a way for a creditor to alert others that they feel you are a deadbeat, and often means they willl agressively collect later. It may give them a tax advantage but it has no effect on the balance.
