Legal Question in Criminal Law in Georgia

I reside in cobb county georgia and about a week ago my roomate and I got to fighting. No throws were thrown, but I did hold him down and my rm ended up hitting his face when he tried to break the hold. During all this I was telling him to stop, and after realizing he couldn't break the hold, he said he was done. He then proceeded to the kitchen and grabbed a knife.

I work for a police department but I'm not a police officer. Once he grabbed the knife I decided to call the police since he refused to put it down. Once the police arrived, they arrested us both and charged us with battery. The officers knew I work for a police department, but couldn't offer any advice.

I'm wondering about how I can go about getting the charges dropped. I thought working for a department the people would help me, but everyone is acting like I have cancer now. I need the charges dropped because I've been trying to become a police officer and I've been told that I can't be accepted into the academy if I have a criminal charge.

I'm hoping to get a lawyer, just not sure how I'm going to since I can't even afford to get my tag registered because of the arrest. I just really need some feedback because I was told by the arresting officer that it wasn't up to us whether we pressed charges. I was told the DA's office would decide that. But from working at a police department, I've seen cases where people didn't go to jail for fighting plus I know of domestic disputes where the husband doesn't get arrested.

My roomate and I have both resolved our dispute. He was charged with Simple Battery Provoke(m) O.C.G.A. 16-5-23(a)(1).

I was charged with Battery, Family Violence(m) O.C.G.A. 16-5-23.1(f).

any suggestions would be great.

Here is my suggestion, please phone your mother and/or father, aunt and/or uncle, grandparents and/or friends and ask if they assist with your defense, because if you do not hire an attorney, you will not be able to pursue yor dream of becoming a police officer. After your friends and family help you put some money together, meet with some attorneys and get some insight into the matter. The case will not be resolved unless and until you hire the right attorney. Good luck.
