Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

Alimony Modification

When I divirced 5 years ago, I agreed to an alimony of $1750 a month...based on my past 2 years earnings of $120,000 a year. Now I earn $65,000 a year and have no after tax money for gas or food. What is the process for requesting a modification to the alimony and can I file the request without an attorney (which I cannot afford)?

Re: Alimony Modification

You cannot afford to do thsi without a lawyer.

Depending on the language, you may be able to seek modification. While there are no guarantees, your odds pro se are very low and a lawyer may help.

At $65K a year, most people can afford a lawyer, although it may mean doing without a few things. In the long run that is smart though.

Re: Alimony Modification

The question that you are seeking assistance with is outside the scope of this nonconfidential forum, which is not intended to teach individuals skills that lawyers spend many years acquiring and continually update.

You already received sound advice from another attorney. My only additional comment is that by pursing the matter in court yourself, you may memorialize information that will actually harm your position in any subsequent proceeding, in the event that you elect to hire an attorney after initiating an action.
