Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Georgia

Decesed with no will and debts

My aunt just passed away. Her only asset is a checking account with a few thousand dollars. She has $40,000 in medical bills. She left no will. She lived with me when she dies so her bills are sent here. How should I handle this? Can I just ignore the bills?

Her estate is responsible for her debts. However, as a practical matter, if you advise the creditor of the situation, it will probably just write off the debt. Consult with a local attorney.

Her bills come before heirs. Whatever is left over can't be paid. In the situation you describe meeting with a lawyer to determine how to deal with everyone would be a very good idea.
