Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Georgia

Oldest child trying to deal with father's dying

My father is dying of lung cancer and has only a matter of days left. I am the oldest of 4 siblings. He has lived with a woman, who I have thought of as my stepmother, although they are not married. He was taken against his will to the hospital by ambulance two weeks ago. I flew to GA only to find out that I am legally his next of kin. I had to make the decision to send him home (which was he desire) on hospice. Now, I am getting alot of friction with his ''other''. He has nothing. I did find out that she has a life ins policy on him which is supposed to pay for his funeral expenses. She is now trying to convince my father and my siblings that I have hired an attny and am trying to get everything that he has. I'm not sure what my legal and financial obligations are at this point. She has been cashing his retirement checks, but not paying his medical bills. I'm worried that once he passes away, I will be liable to pay those bills plus funeral expenses. Please lead me in the direction that I need to take.

Thank You for your time!

Re: Oldest child trying to deal with father's dying

His estate will be responsible for the costs of the funeral/bills. With a few exceptions, heirs are not responsible for expenses personally.
