Legal Question in International Law in Germany

Different last name on birth cert.

I recently found out the last name on my birth cert is my mother's maiden name, not the last name I have used all my life. My parents were not married until after I was a year old. Also I was born in Germany. My birth cert is German. My mother is German and father is American and were married in Germany. We moved to the US after my father left the army. Do I need to do anything legally? What is my real last name?

Re: Different last name on birth cert.

You can go to court and petition for a change of name. There is a filling fee of $320 plus maybe another $100 to have your petition printed in the legal newspaper. Probably there is a newspaper near you that runs legal tombstone advertising, often the legal advertising dept. of the newspaper can tell you exactly what to do. After your petition is filed there is a hearing and then your name change will be official.
