Giving Grandparents Legal Custody for School

My son has been living with his grandparents on his fathers side.He's about to enter high school and they won't allow it unless the grandparents have legal custody. We live in two seperate districts.While living with me, he did not do well.In school or home.He didn't like the school or the people.He's doing much better now and I don't want to remove him from there.Do the grandparents have to file or can I?Will I lose my rights?Is it like custody?Can't I file?Why not?

There are two types of custody legal and physical. You can modify any type of custody and design by stipulation substantial visitation rights for yourself here in Hawaii so long as it is in the Best Interest of the Child. The Grandparents will have to petition for legal custody. However, with any grant of custody to others one loses considerable rights regarding decision making for a non-custodial child. Being that your child is high school age there is not much more time until they reach the age of majority and the court will allow the child to testify on his own desires.
