Legal Question in Administrative Law in Illinois

Changing a child's 1st/middle name

Hello,

My husband and I were ''guilted'' into giving our son a traditional/ethnic 1st and middle name, which we now regret. He is 2 years old, and we usually call him ''Jon'' day-to-day. We worry that although he goes by Jon, in school and as an adult he will have complications unless he signs his ethnic name for everything ''legal'' in nature. Our question: can a person legally use their middle name to sign important documents? And if so, how do I go about changing my son's middle name to Jon? We live in Cook County, Illinois. Thanks!

Re: Changing a child's 1st/middle name

As for the signature, someone can sign "X" as representative of his name, so whatever he uses to sign his name would be fine.

As for legally changing his name, it is not a difficult process but it requires a court appearance. Please feel free to contact me if you would like assistance in this area.
