Credit card debt

I did the favor for a past friend of signing a as a cosigner for a credit card. He left the country and continued spending. Now there is a $3,000 debt and he is not paying. I am now getting calls from collection asking me to pay this debt. I did not waste any of that money and now I do not know what to do.

You are a cosigner and and co-responsible for the debt. Do you want to pay? Do you have to declare bankrupcy? Do you need an attorney?
