Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

Joint account credit card not being taken care of by other party

I made the mistake of entering into a joint account credit card with an old roomate. I moved out the next month, with the agreement that she would take care of the balance, given that I did not take one thing purchased on the (furniture) credit card. My otherwise flawless credit is now ruined by the fact that she has not since made one payment. I am willing to even take on some of the debt, but I want the balance taken care of. What can I do?

As far as the credit company is concerned you are "on the hook" for the debt. As for your roomate you could bring an action in small claims court depending on how much is owed.

The problem is whether your old roommate has the money to pay for the debt.

If you want help filing an action give me a call at (847) 223-4410.

You can pay the balance and, therefore, clean up your credit record as best as possible, and then institute suit against your former roommate for her half of the amount paid (including interest charges).
