Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

When I first married John, we agreed that he would make the mortgage payment on our home, and also the mortgage on his cabin. I agreed I would pay all the bills that came from the house, i.e., electric, gas, phone, etc.

Cut to 2009 when I got laid off from my well paying job and the company I worked for closed down. Now, I don't have enough money to cover our bills. He ended up paying them but claims I owe him about 20K. Is that right? Do I owe him?

No. If you are spouses, any debts are marital obligations governed by

family law. Any such "debts" are not enforceable.
