Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

possession of cannabis/paraphanalea

My friend received a local ordinance for possession of cannabis/paraphernalia in Gurnee, Il. He is under the age of 18 and has no police record. What is the worst case scenario that could happen. On the ticket the box that said he has to appear in court was not checked. There was 4 other people that got arrested with him that night.

Re: possession of cannabis/paraphanalea

Your friend did not receive a local ordinance, he or she might have received a ticket for violating a local ordinance. The worst thing that could happen is that the charge could be referred to the state's attorney and refiled as a misdemeanor (or two), and then your friend being convicted and sentenced to jail time and fines as allowed by law. However, it seems likely that the charge(s) will remain local. If your friend is smart enough to hire an attorney, an attorney should be able to help your friend avoid the conviction(s) and get on with your life.
