Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

Moving out at age 17

If you are only 17 and are having problems at home with your family, and it is becoming a dangerous enviroment for you, is there anything you can do to move out, even if you have to live with someone 18 or over?

Re: Moving out at age 17

Yes, no one should live in an environment which is harmful or threatens harm. A 17 yr old can move out of the house. If the parents or guardians attempt to enforce their parental rights, you inform the court or DCFS of the situation. Of course, you should have the consent and support of the adult with whom you move in. If you have no one to live with, you should contact the closest office of state Dept of Children and Family Services, explain the situation to a caseworker, intake person, investigator, or whoever is assigned to your case. The agency is required to help you leave that situation and be placed in a safe environment, but if you don't have a relative or friend who will help, the agency may have to place you with a foster parent or temporary guardian until you attain 18. Good luck.
