Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois

I lived in a house at the end of 2005. It was a rent to own situation. I moved in and lived their for two months, but the land lord would show up several times a week and drive us nuts. Calling all the time, checking on the house. We ripped out the carpet in one room because it was in rough shape and was going to redo the floors. We got issued a bill for over $400 to relay carpet in a small room because she saw the carpet in the trash. Finally we had enough and moved after two months. 5 years later we get issued with a lawsuit for the cost of fixing/cleaning the house and over $6k for the difference they sold the house for from what we were going to buy it for. I got a lawyer and the lawyer said I didn't have to go to court the first few times. He kept up with me the first couple of times and then I never heard from him again. Never heard anything again. I've been researching the case to see what happened and I found that I lost for nearly $9k because no one showed up to court. I never heard about this again. I'm sure they'll come after me, but I just found I lost. Can I sue the lawyer? What can I do? It's rediculous if you're lawyer misleads you and fails to show and I get stuck with $9k of debt. Help?
