Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois

I lived with a man for a short period of time, not married. He will not give me my belongings. He wants me to come alone and he will give me my belongings, but i'm afraid of him. The police won't help and says I need a lawyer, i don't have any finances at this time because of this situation. He lives in Illinois. What do I need to do to get my personnel belongings.

You could send him a letter, certified mail, demanding the immediate return of your belongings by a certain date. If he doesn't deliver them, depending on the value of your belongings, you might think about filing a lawsuit in small claims court.

I would provide you with the same advice as David has. Be sure to have proof of what your belongings are worth if you file( Ebay, classifieds, Craigs List).
