Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

Hi

I was let go from my job yesterday for poor performance. I am/was a business analyst for the Chicago Housing Authority. I need to better understand what my rights are. I realize that illinois is a "at-will" state, but to be let go for poor performance does not adequately represent what occurred. I was systematically left out of meetings, only given partial information when assigned to a projects, ect. When I requested what was being required of me and due dates, they asked me to right it down and email it to me. Obviously, I did not take comfort in this, but was told that it would be insubordination if I did not do it. (there is a long laundry list here)

Shortly thereafter, my co-workers know I was being singled out and began to harrass me. When they knew what they were doing was not welcome, they began to manufacture items of abuse from me (specifically my manager). I did not know this was happening until just recently. It had been occuring since mid April when I inquired to a new seating arrangement.

My question is whether I should seek legal advise on this. I feel that my professional carreer may be in jeopardy. I'm really shocked by what occurred. I was equally shocked to hear that many of my predicessors were let go in similar fashion when they began to offer suggestions on how to better streamline the position. Could this hurt my future job search? Do I have to disclose this on an application when seeking employment in the future?

Thanks

Andy

Andy,

You are correct that Illinois is an at will state. But, as a government employee, you are entitled to due process prior to your termination. You most definitely should consult with counsel to determine what course of action will best protect your interests.
