Is it legal for my employer to not hire me back after maternity leave since I now have a baby?

You do not mention if you took time off pursuant to the FMLA. If you did, your employer is required to return you to your job after your leave for childbirth is over. If you did not take time off pursuant to the FMLA or some other form of "protected" leave (that means leave that by law requires your employer to return you to your job after the leave is over), your employer must not treat you less favorably than other non-pregnant employees who have taken leave and seek to return to work.
