Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

I was terminated my first day back from a scheduled, approved vacation. The owner said "I was told you made disparaging comments about me so I'm letting you go. The decision has been made." I asked her (and HR, who was present) to please provide me with details as I was out if the country for 2 1/2 weeks and had no idea what she was referring to. They are unable to provide me with anything specific. HR said at the time "she went on a rampage last Friday and said she was going to fire you. I have no idea what happened." Is this legal? Also, I have an "appeal interview" for my unemployment and am concerned they will deny me benefits

Unfortunately, Illinois is an at-will employment state and your employment can be terminated at any time, with or without cause. If your manager has the right to fire you, then you can be let go. (I assume you do not have an employment contract or are a union member.)

As for unemployment insurance, it does not apply if you have been terminated for cause. You may want to get an attorney to appeal any such determination, because it sounds like you may have done nothing wrong.
