Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

Landlord sent lease renewal letter stating a rental increase of $50.00 for a 12-month term. I agreed and gave proper notice of intent to renew.

After I decided to renew, the landlord changed the 12-month rental increase to $100. Is this legal? This happened in Illinois.

If your landlord offered you a renewal @ $50 more in writing and you accepted it in writing, then technically your landlord is in breach of agreement. The question is what do you want out of the situation? Assuming you want to stay, you need to see if you can find out from the landlord what gives -- politely because what you're doing is gathering information that you may use to legally enforce the situation against the landlord. If you get the info great if not either way I suggest you take it to an attorney who can help, including writing a letter to the landlord to live up to his accepted offer. Now, that having been said, you may be in the right but if the landlord winds up having to renew you @ $50/month, what kind of trouble do you think you might walk into with the landlord? We can't judge what might happen since we don't have the chance to review the entire situation with you on line this way. So beware -- you might want to consider compromising on a $75 increase in case that will keep the peace......
