Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

My rent was due on Oct. 3. I mailed it to my landlord on Oct. 3. I included a late fee for one day. I sent it certified mail. I tracked the letter online and the United States Postal Service says that delivery was attempted and a notice was left at his residence on Oct. 4 at 2:04 pm. My landlord is saying that he never recieved a notice or my check. He is attempting to collect late fees from me for 4 days and continue until he receives another check from me. What can I do??

You could stop payment on the check (probably $25 charge), and drop off a check for 2 months at your landlords and ask the landlord to drop the late fee. You'll owe next month anyhow, right? This will make amends. If you can't afford that, stop payment and drop off a check in the amount the landlord wants. It was your obligation to get it to the landlord on the first. You'll spend more time and money fighting over it.
