Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

I was given a dog for my birthday back in 2009. The dog has been registered as me being the new owner. Back in 2010 I moved into an apartment that did not allow pets, so I asked my boyfriend's mother if my dog could stay with her until I move into another place that allows pets. My dog has been living with her for a year now and I am ready to take my dog back now, but she refuses to give him back claiming that my dog is hers now. I never signed her over ownership that still makes me the primary owner of my dog. I have the documents stating that I am the owner. What should I do to get my dog back?

You could try asking for assistance from your local police. You could try a letter from a lawyer. or you can sue her.
