Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

My home was remodeled in 2001. The home was built in 1961. My county tax assessor changed the age of house for tax purposes after the house was remodeled. He said since the house was 40 years old, he will take half the age of the house and so now for tax purposes, they tax me on a 1981 house. Is this an industry standard? Or can this be challenged and could I win?

Thank you,

Mike James

The assessment process can be appealed, but there are strict time limits. If you have missed the "closing date" for your township, you may be out of luck, or may be stuck with a more costly route. See an attorney who handles property tax matters to have the situation fully evaluated. PS - it's not an "industry standard" so much as it is a set of rules and formulas that the Assessor is supposed to apply consistently.
