Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

I was a homeowner in the city of Chicago. I surrendered my home back to the bank in 2007 and moved out. The city turned off the water right after i moved out. It was forclosed on in 2009. They have been billing me ever since. It is now up to almost $6000. On November 14th the have a court date to garnish my check. Am I liable for a bill on property i no longer own?

Basically, no.

Go to the court date on the 14th. Show evidence of the foreclosure. You have two weeks to find your paperwork. If you don't have it you will need to go the County Clerk's office and do a title search. You will need evidence. The court will not accept your word for it. That should do it.

BUT GO TO COURT. You cannot do this by remote control.

I agree with Mr. Palmer with the added comments that it appears that you appear to have been ignoring the bills because for the city to be coming after you on a wage garnishment means they already have a judgment against you for the unpaid water bills and if the judgment was properly obtained it may be too old and you may not be able to contest it. Plus a judgment goes against your credit rating and $6000 is nothing to sneeze at. I therefore highly recommend you get an attorney to help you with this.
