Sounds like a horrible situation. Banks just want to be paid what they're owed. If you've had the mortgage a long time and it's a local bank, and you went in to talk to the bank about maybe deferring payments, and they won't consider it, you will need professional help. Otherwise you're right; if you stop paying the mortgage regardless of the reason, the bank can take legal action that could cost you even more. If you need help finding an attorney whom you can afford, there are local bar associations that can direct you and local legal aid societies too.
