Legal Question in Traffic Law in Illinois

Texting while driving ticket?

I received a ticket for texting while driving, I was using gps on my phone to plug in an address. The officer still gave me a ticket. I also explained to him that I did not know that it became a law - if I really did , I would not admit to the officer that I was on my phone ( he mentioned that it was a recently passed law, and would not let me off with a warning). I want to fight this in court...what is the best way to win this over?

..i know it's unsafe, i got information on it from the officer-so I am not disputing safety. All I want to know is how I can defend myself in court and see if I can possibly ask the judge to reduce it to a warning - since I have a clean record. Thank you!

Ignorance of the law is not a valid defense.

You may want to tell the judge that you were not "texting", but merely inputting directions on your GPS.

I recommend you retain an attorney to go with you to court.
