Notice of Estate

My brothers and I received a Notice of Estate for our great uncle who left the contents of his estate to his nieces and nephews. Our mother was his niece but she died before he did so we were given Notice of the Estate and were listed as heirs; however, we were told that we were not entitled to any payouts. Why is that and why did we even get a notice?

Even if not a beneficiary under the will, all heirs who would receive if there was no will are entitled to receive notice of probate and a statement of their rights.
