if a person dies owning a house and left no will, how is the property rights determined?

If he had no co-owners then Illinois state law gives the house to the decedent's heirs. The heirs are defined in a law of "descent and distribution." First in line are the spouse and children. If no spouse then the children. If no children then the spouse. If neither then siblings and ancestors, etc.
