Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Illinois

My wife's grandfather just passed away and has roughly $12K in credit card debt. He left nothing other than the junk in his apartment. No life insurance, just a little in a savings account and a car. Will the items of his need to be sold to pay the credit card debt or can they be sold to pay for the funeral? Can the credit card companies try to collect from any relatives? This is in Illinois. Thanks

No. The relatives are not the debtor. If his estate has no assets then there is nothing to do about it.
