Legal Question in Business Law in Indiana

i am an illustrator. i have illustrated several works with various authors over the internet for many years now. Recently, I entered into an agreement with a young lady that subsequently trashed our original agreement and decided not to publish the book. she offered to pay me for my work in installments. I thought I had really no reason to go not go along with her new offer. She has since trashed that one too , and is now offering to pay me something in some far off time.....Can I go ahead and publish the work my self , giving her full credit for authorship, and keep what I think are fair expenses? I am thinking of sending her a letter demanding payment first with a clause that if she does not pay me that I will construe that as a permission to go ahead with my plan to publish. please advise....

You cannot take the law into your own hands. You cannot publish someone else's property and decide what its worth. Your recourse is through the courts to adjudicate what is owed to you, and then a request to the court to allow you to attach the author's property. You will need a lawyer---it's not a do-it- yourself project. you also have to ask yourself whether its worth the cost or not.
