Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Indiana

debt collection agency

I have been contacted by a collections agency regarding two old debts that they say originated with the Royal Bank of Scotland and quote the 'Date of Service'' as 11/12/01 and 10/16/00. I did have some British cards around that time were lost or stolen and reported. I was never contacted by the credit card companies so assumed the cards closed and the matter dealt with. I have no proof of my contact with the companies since it was just telephone calls. Where do I go from here? I had three telephone calls from them regarding one of the cards prior to two letters one regarding each of two cards. I do not remember having a Royal Bank of Scotland credit card but they may have bought out other companies for all I know I was never informed.

Re: debt collection agency

When you get your first written communication from the collection agency, you will see an advisory that if you dispute the debt then you must send a request for verification of the debt within 30 days. You must do this. You should send the letter by certified mail so that you have a record that they actually received the request.
