Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Indiana

lawyer attempting to collect fees

I hired an attorney to help me collect child support. The total bill to-date is appr. $5,000.00. I have paid him all but $2,500.00. The Judge has court ordered my ex to pay $1,525 of this balance. My attorney is suing ME for the entire amount. Can he do this? Work release accidentally released my ex before our compliance hearing and is now ''on-the-lamb''. He is also charging me appr. $23/mo interest on the $2,500.00 balance. Can't a single mother get a break these days? Can he do this?

Re: lawyer attempting to collect fees

You had an agreement with this attorney. The agreement likely said that he will attempt to get the court to order fees from your ex, but that in case your ex doesn't pay, then you have to pay. He was your attorney and these are your fees. Your ex-husband may be a deadbeat, but it doesn't dissolve your obligation to pay your attorney.
