Legal Question in Criminal Law in Indiana

My son went to college in 2007 where he had an onset of an undiagnosed mental disorder. He accrued many serious charges over a 5 day span. The case is still pending. In May 2009 he was unable to get medications for 5 months and another serious onset of his symptoms and accrued more charges in his home county. My question is - he is being detained for a year in may. Our public deenders offivce closed and he was not assigned another public defender - nor are there any court dates set. Can he file a motion Pro Se to be released from custody?

He should file a request for new counsel, who can then make decisions about what to do.
